Paul DELVAUX (1897-1994). "Chaussée de Tervuren à Auderghem" - Lot 293
Paul DELVAUX (1897-1994). "Chaussée de Tervuren à Auderghem". Rare post-impressionist work from 1924 archived and documented by the Delvaux Foundation. Oil on canvas. Thanks to the intervention of the Paul Delvaux Foundation and its director Mrs. Camille Brasseur, the street illustrated on the work could be precisely located. It is irrefutably the Chaussée de Tervuren in the municipality of Auderghem and not in Boitsfort as the catalog raisonné erroneously states. The painting is indeed illustrated in the reference work: "Paul Delvaux, catalog raisonné de l'œuvre peint-Michel Butor, Jean Clair, Suzanne Houbart-Wilkin. Figure 25, page 153. Published in the daily La Nacion Buenos Aires in 1925. Madame Brasseur explains: "At the beginning of the 1920s, Delvaux regularly visited Auderghem and particularly the Rouge Cloître where he went to paint from life. Thanks to the enlightened knowledge of Louis Schreyers and the research of Christian Clauss, passionate authors of books about Auderghem, the portion of the roadway represented could be determined. The house at number 111 has been demolished in the meantime... but a comparison with the 2009 photos speaks for itself! See the photographic montage transposing the work of the painter in the current roadway of Tervuren of Auderghem. Our feeling : This painting offers us a temporal journey in the animated roadway of a winter evening of 1924. This work from before his surrealist period initiated in 1934 is particularly rich in atmosphere and animation. A hint of surrealism slowly appears with the lady in the foreground whose red hat covers 3/4 of her face. Finally, we would like to thank Mrs. Brasseur, director of the Delvaux Foundation, and all the people who have brought this fascinating historical detail to light: the alderman of culture of Auderghem, Sophie de Vos, Louis Schreyers, and the Auderghem History Circle. Thanks also to the VGC, the Hertoginnedal library, Marijke Meel, Lieve Everaert and Christian Clauss and finally Sam Biesemans and Henri Ceuppens of HISCIWAB Dimensions: 100cm x 78cm. The resale rights of 4% are applicable in addition to the auction price. They are reduced to 3% above 100000 euros and to 1% above 200000 euros. NL: Paul DELVAUX (1897-1994). Landschap bij Auderghem, Tervuursesteenweg. Olieverf op doek . The painter is opgenomen in the oeuvrecatalogus "Paul Delvaux, oeuvrecatalogus van het geschilderde werk-Michel Butor, Jean Clair, Suzanne Houbart-Wilkin. It is on the Tervurensesteenweg in Oudergem and not in Bosvoorde as it is described in the catalog raisonné. This model of the surrealistic period, which began in 1934, is very much in keeping with the spirit of the period. Thanks also to VGC, Bibliotheek Hertoginnedal, Marijke Meel, Lieve Everaert and Christian Clauss And to slot Sam Biesemans and Henri Ceuppens of HISCIWAB Size: 100cm x 78cm.
