OVERBEEK (Bonaventura van). Reliquiæ antiquæ urbis Romæ. Ams - Lot 134
OVERBEEK (Bonaventura van). Reliquiæ antiquæ urbis Romæ. Amsterdam, Johannes Crellius, 1708. 3 large folio volumes, antique boards, untrimmed. First edition of this sumptuous work on the architectural remains of ancient Rome, "esteemed for the accuracy of the drawings" (Brunet), to which Bonaventura van Overbeek devoted twenty years of his life. It was not published until after his death by his cousin Michiel van Overbeke. This first Latin edition was followed by a French translation in 1709 and an Italian one in 1739. The illustration consists of 146 beautiful views of Rome drawn and copper-engraved by the author, including a double-page view of the Colosseum, plus an allegorical frontispiece, a plate opposite the dedication to Queen Anne of England and Scotland and a double-page plan of Rome, all three engraved by Matthys Pool, as well as a fine portrait of the author interpreted by Cornelis Vermeulen after Jacob Christoph Le Blon and 33 numismatic figures in the text. One of the most important iconographies of the Eternal City. The Dutch painter and engraver Bonaventura van Overbeek (1660-1705), a pupil of Gérard de Lairesse, brought together here all the drawings he produced during his three trips to Rome, for which he claims the precision of the measurements in his preface, reproaching his predecessors for having scarcely respected reality. A working copy enriched with many interesting handwritten annotations in French (architecture, history, bibliography, etc.) written in the 19th century in the margins of the text, and two later plans of Rome. Scattered foxing and spotting, plan of Rome and double plate of the Colosseum browned, small marginal lack not serious at the bottom of the first leaves and engravings of volume I, fine marginal wetness at the end of volume III, worn boards, spines missing, a few leaves unbound. UCBA, II, 1513 - Brunet, IV, 264. Expert : Librairie Giraud Badin, Paris.
