Agnès TAIT (1894-1981). New York school. Portrait of an elegant woman with a green hat in a Gothic interior. Oil on canvas, circa 1930. Dimensions: 102 x 98 cm. Agnès Tait was born in New York in 1894. After graduating from high school, she won numerous prizes at the National Academy of Design. In 1927, after a few weeks' study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she founded her own studio in Manhattan. Her first exhibition was held with other female artists and received a review in the New York Times. It was after a third trip to Europe in 1933 that she conceived her most famous work, Skating in Central Park, as part of the Public Works of Art Project. She spent the latter part of her life with her husband in New Mexico, where she continued to be prolific. Many of her works are in the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library, among others.
