A rare cabinet resting on a cylindrical base with a rotating - Lot 255
A rare cabinet resting on a cylindrical base with a rotating mechanism. This piece, which can be described as a masterpiece, is adorned with exquisite marquetry featuring cubes made of various types of precious wood. The front opens into two hinged sections, whose interior doors—inlaid with a wave pattern—reveal letter-holding compartments. The central section opens by folding down onto a panel also inlaid with waves. It is, in fact, a flap that slides upward to reveal a charming display consisting of niches and three drawers, the bottom one of which is subdivided. Related item: Sale on October 24, 2022, at the Chatres Gallery, GDC Judicial Auction—Maîtres Gody-Baudau, Maiche, Rivière of a virtually identical cabinet created by Claude Berthier, Meilleur Ouvrier de France, crafted in 1986 for the 17th competition. Our piece is unsigned. Dimensions: 50 x 50 x 50 cm when closed; height 55 cm including the base.
