CITES NOTE: VALID ONLY FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION. EXPORT OUTSID - Lot 75
CITES NOTE: VALID ONLY FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION. EXPORT OUTSIDE THE EEC IS PROHIBITED. Christ carved in ivory in the round. Head with very wavy hair and a forked beard; gaze raised toward the sky and mouth slightly parted; fringed perizonium revealing the right thigh, held in place by a cord ending in tassels; asymmetrical legs, with the right leg bent. Spain, 17th century. Sold with a CITES certificate. Appraiser: Cabinet Fligny, Paris. Height: 21.5 cm – Weight: 227.4 g Brown ink inscriptions on the reverse (Arms detached, fingers missing, damage to the tip of the nose, and right leg reattached) Based on its characteristics, this Christ figure can be attributed to a Spanish school of art that rendered the hair, the perizonium, and the venous network with great precision and finesse. The Harvard Museum holds a similar example, dating from the same period and displaying the same level of craftsmanship (Inv. 1983.32)
