Rare Christ in ivory carved in the round. Head crowned with - Lot 317
Rare Christ in ivory carved in the round. Head crowned with crown of thorns tilted towards the right shoulder, slanted eyes with drooping tips, open V-shaped arm, protruding diaphragm and submammary ribs, perizonium held by a double cord with lateral fall on the left hip. Probably Sino-Portuguese, 18th century. Sold with Cites certificate. Expert : Cabinet Fligny, Paris. Height : 47 cm. Weight : 1485 g This Christ with its atypical physical characteristics could be linked to a Sino-Portuguese production of the 18th century, particularly in the work on the eyes, hair and perizonium. Several examples with similarities to this Christ are still preserved today in churches or congregations such as that of Alcino e Lilia Gomes Oliveira, or in collections such as that of Dr. Joaquim Torres in Porto or Dr. Antonio Miranda in Lisbon. Book consulted: A expansão portuguesa e a arte do marfim: exposição / Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Comemorações Descobrimentos Portugueses. - Lisboa: F.C.G., 1991, p. 146,147,148.
