Living Christ in ivory carved in the round. Head looking up - Lot 313
Living Christ in ivory carved in the round. Head looking up to the sky with open mouth, wavy locks of hair resting on the shoulders, short beard, open V-shaped arms, perizonium held by a cord with lateral fall on the left hip, parallel legs and feet. 17th/18th century. Sold with Cites certificate. Expert : Cabinet Fligny, Paris. Height : 48 cm. Weight : 1689 grammes (cracks) An ivory Christ, dated 1700 and now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. 449-1895), is particularly close to this one. The inclination of the head, the expression of agony, the parallel legs and the short perizonium held in place by a cord are all comparable elements that support this dating.
