Trapani's craftsmanship reached its golden age in the 17th and 18th centuries, with sculptures and compositions often set in elaborate architectural settings. Andrea Tipa, who died in 1766, stands out above all for his small-scale, highly detailed works, particularly in ivory. We owe him some fine cribs, as well as a particularly popular amber calvary adorned with ivory figures and decorated with shell and mother-of-pearl flowers. He also created beautiful shell cameos and mother-of-pearl boxes. His brother and pupil, Alberto Tipa, who died in 1783, is renowned for his alabaster sculptures, particularly the lighter ones, as well as for his ivory bas-reliefs. He also created large groups carved from a single piece of ivory, and excelled in working with mother-of-pearl and shell cameos. Among his works is the crib preserved at the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas (inv. CE28856).
