Beautiful Jansenist-type living Christ in ivory carved in th - Lot 19
Beautiful Jansenist-type living Christ in ivory carved in the round. Made from a single piece of ivory, including the perizonium, only the nipples are made from added pastilles. Head looking up to the sky, long wavy hair falling over the shoulders, V-shaped arms, short perizonium held by a cord leaving the left leg uncovered, lateral fall on the right hip, parallel legs and slightly superimposed asymmetrical feet, back with lower loins uncovered. 17th century. Sold with Cites certificate. Expert : Cabinet Fligny, Paris. Height : 41 cm. Weight : 615 grams. This Christ belongs to the category of so-called "Jansenist" Christs, characterized by their long barrel and inspired by a model disseminated by Peter Rubens. Large Christs in one-piece carved ivory are rare: the arms are not attached, but carved as an extension of the body. In Seville Cathedral, the 17th-century Christ (approx. 40 cm) is monoxyle. The constrained verticality of the arms, imposed by the diameter of the tusk, accentuates its expressive rigidity. The Christ in the Musée du Louvre (early 18th century, inv. OA 88) displays the same technical and stylistic characteristics.
