High-relief carved ivory plaque depicting a bust of Saint An - Lot 3
High-relief carved ivory plaque depicting a bust of Saint Anne the teacher, framed by two cherubs. Southern Germany, entourage of Georg Fux (1661-1706), late 17th century. Sold with Cites Certificate. Expert : Cabinet Fligny, Paris. Height : 9.5 cm - Width : 7.5 cm - Depth : 3.5 cm - Weight : 124 g (minor damage and missing parts) Georg Fux (1661-1706) was a German sculptor active in the late 17th century, associated with the South German Baroque tradition. He is best known for his technically virtuoso ivory crucifixes, sometimes carved in a single piece, in which the anatomical tension and expressiveness of the faces are particularly accentuated. He is also credited with wood carvings. The Saint Anne on the altar of the Holy Family in Straubing's Carmelite Church, for example, displays marked features and a hardness of expression comparable to that seen on this ivory plaque.
