Eugène BOCH (1855-1941). Sunny cottage. Unsigned oil on canv - Lot 41
Eugène BOCH (1855-1941). Sunny cottage. Unsigned oil on canvas, annotated on the back. Provenance: Former Marcel Bougard collection, La Louvière. We would like to thank Madame Thérèse Thomas, specialist in the painters Anna and Eugène Boch and author of the Anna Boch catalog raisonné, for kindly confirming the work's authenticity. Madame Thomas tells us that the late Mr. Bougard, a design inspector at art academies, was the first art historian to work on Eugène Boch's work. It should also be noted that, like most of Eugène Boch's paintings on the market and in collections, the two subjects presented in this catalog are unsigned. Eugène had a discreet temperament and painted mainly for his own personal pleasure, unlike his sister Anna, who was proud to claim her work as her own and enjoyed the mundane. He therefore felt no need to sign his works. As Madame Thomas tells us, it was only at the age of 70, during an exhibition and at the urging of friends, that he began to affix his signature to his paintings. Dimensions: 32 x 51 cm. Dimensions: 75 x 53 cm.
