Oscar NEMON (1906-1985). The dog Tatoon or Tatoun. Life-size - Lot 347
Oscar NEMON (1906-1985). The dog Tatoon or Tatoun. Life-size bronze with very fine green outdoor patina. Valsuani foundry. Mentioned by Princess Marie Bonaparte in her book Topsy about her eponymous chow chow. Tatoun (February 1931-October 1931) is said to be the only surviving puppy from the litter of Yofi, Sigmund Freud's second chow-chow, given to him by the Princess. Tatoun is one of Topsy's progenitors. This sculpture is a tribute to the strong bonds of friendship between psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and Princess Marie Bonaparte and their shared passion for chow chows. Oscar Nemon created a sculpture of the dog Topsy in 1938, which is now housed in Oxford's Ashmolean Museum. In literature, we find illustrations of the Princess and Topsy, but also in the company of her friend Sigmund Freud. Oscar Nemon, a British sculptor of Croatian origin, is renowned for his sculptures of personalities such as Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and Sigmund Freud. Height: 72 cm. Provenance: Antwerp private collection. Sale MJV SOUDANT Sold May 1, 2022. Waterloo private collection from May 2022 to date. Sold due to departure abroad.
