Bartolomé Garcia de Santiago (Seville, circa 1687 - 1764). Attributed to. Spain, Andalusia, Seville, first half of the 18th century. Important Saint Christopher in wood carved in the round, polychromed and gilded. The Christ-bearer is standing in a wiggling posture, leaning on the trunk of a palm tree held in his right hand. The Child is seated on the saint's left arm, the orb in his left hand. On a lacquered and gilded wood pedestal (a few accidents and restorations). Bartolomé Garcia de Santiago is one of the most famous sculptors of the Sevillian Baroque. This Saint Christopher can be compared with the recently restored Saint Christopher in the Church of Santiago de Jerez. He worked on numerous monumental altarpieces in the province of Seville and often entrusted the coloring of his works to the painter Antonio de Escuda, renowned for his rich gilding and polychromy, particularly in churches in southern Spain.
