Lombardy, attributed to Giovanni Angelo del Maino (active in - Lot 144
Lombardy, attributed to Giovanni Angelo del Maino (active in Pavia from 1496 to 1536), circa 1530. Large carved, polychromed and gilded wooden panel depicting Saint Leonard delivering a captive. The patron saint of prisoners, dressed in his monk's robe, places his hand on the head of a man kneeling in front of him, whose arm is held by his jailer. Six other figures complete the scene, adopting various attitudes, with hills in the background overlooked by a fortified town Ht: 88.5 cm - Width: 85 cm. Old label from Galerie Moderne 1063. Pedestal (minor accidents and missing parts). In this impressive panel, we can clearly recognize the style of Lombard Renaissance sculpture, expressing close interaction between the figures and sometimes exacerbating expressions of pain, as in the prisoner's face. The richness of the gold backgrounds and the careful ornamentation of the garments, enhanced by rinceaux traced a sgraffito, like the architecture crowning the composition on the left, are typical of this Northern Italian school, of which Giovanni Angelo del Maino was one of the most brilliant exponents.
