Marie MEURET-PHILIPPOT (1887-1939). The birch trees. Oil on - Lot 4
Marie MEURET-PHILIPPOT (1887-1939). The birch trees. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 130 x 91 cm. Marie Philippot was born in Charleroi in 1887. When she was very young, she developed her art with the patron Blommart de Soye, with whom she stayed during the vacations. There, she picked fresh flowers to finance the purchase of painting materials. Her marriage to M. Meuret in 1911 had a positive influence on her vocation. The Great War, however, meant that she could no longer paint. During this period, she devoted herself to serving a resistance network. When the war was over, she took lessons from the painter Willem Delsaux. In 1925, she took part in her first exhibition at the Galerie d'Art in Brussels. She was off and running. Her exhibitions in 1926, 1927 and 1934 at the Paris salon of the Union des femmes peintres et sculpteurs (UFPS) de France earned her flattering critical acclaim and compliments from the President of the French Republic, Gaston Doumergue. His end was tragic: in 1939, his studio was consumed by fire, destroying over 60 works. This ordeal dealt a fatal blow to her feverish health, and she died a fortnight later at the age of 52. She joined the group of Hainaut artists such as Delsaux, Doumont, Higuet, Martin, Mascaux, Paulus and Scoriel.
