Hendrik de MEYER I (1600-1690). Attack on a convoy on a brid - Lot 91
Hendrik de MEYER I (1600-1690). Attack on a convoy on a bridge. Oil on oak panel, three boards, reinforced. Signed lower center 'H de Meyer fecit / 1655. Bears an old attribution to Pieter Snayers. Dimensions : 74 x 106 cm. Old restorations. Expert : Cabinet Turquin. Paris. Provenance : Château Havaux, Saint-Ghislain, Belgium. In the family from the outset, the property on rue Saint Charles was razed to the ground by Allied bombing raids in 1944. The work is mentioned several times in estate inventories dating back to the early 20th century. We enclose a copy of an insurance inventory dated August 22, 1942, in which the painting is described as Snayers and valued at 10,000 francs at the time. We also enclose a copy of an appraisal drawn up on May 27, 1975 by Madame Edith Greindl (1905-2004), a leading Belgian historian specializing in Flemish art. The valuation at the time was one million Belgian francs (25,000 euros), which, following the inflation curve, brings us to around 110,000 euros today...
