Bust of character in carved limestone with traces of polychr - Lot 23
Bust of character in carved limestone with traces of polychromy. Face with full cheeks, large almond-shaped eyes, hollow and rounded pupils, mouth with thick lips and raised corners. He is dressed in a coat highlighted with large parallel folds which reveals a tunic with a rounded collar edged with a large braid. Romanesque art, Auvergne, Saint-Pierre-de-Mozac abbey? First half of the 12th century. Height: 23.3 cm – Width: 9.5 cm. By its style and the nature of its limestone, this small bust shows points in common with the statuary of the abbey of Saint-Pierre-de-Mozac in Puy-de Dôme. We recognize the deep hollowness of the pupils, the hemmed eyelids, the full shape of the face, the thick lips and the kind expression of the mouth as well as the summary folds of the clothes. Several sculptors are the authors of the rich decoration of this ancient Benedictine abbey, including the “Master of Mozac” to whom the most beautiful capitals of the north aisle of the nave are attributed. The bust would be closer in its construction to the decoration of the tympanum of the old porch of the cloister, made quite early in the 12th century and which shows the Virgin in majesty framed by several characters including the founding abbot in prayer (fig.) . The former royal abbey of Mozac, attached in 1095 to the abbey of Cluny, was the most important testimony to the Cluniac boom in Auvergne. It was partly destroyed during several earthquakes in the second half of the 15th century and the majority of its buildings sold as national property in 1792. (small accidents) Work consulted: N.
