FIRST ISSUE OF THE PLAN DE TURGOT, THE MOST FAMOUS PLAN OF PARIS, consisting of twenty superb double-page plates engraved by Claude Lucas after drawings by Louis Bretez and a folded assembly plan. In 1734, the realization of a new plan of the capital was ordered by Michel-Etienne Turgot (1690-1751), provost of the merchants of Paris, whose name remained attached to this resolutely modern initiative "by its will to propose and impose in France and throughout the world the image of Paris, universal model of a Capital City" (Pierre Pinon). The architect and cartographer Louis Bretez worked for two years on the very precise survey and drawing of this plan of Paris and its suburbs, and chose to use the so-called cavalier perspective, without distance points.
