Paul DELVAUX (1897-1994).
Paul DELVAUX (1897-1994). "Chaussée de Tervuren in Auderghem". Oil on canvas. Thanks to the intervention of the Paul Delvaux foundation and its director, Camille Brasseur, the street illustrated on the work could be precisely located. It is irrefutably the Chaussée de Tervuren in the town of Auderghem and not in Boitsfort, as the catalog raisonné erroneously mentions ". The painting is indeed illustrated in the reference work: "Paul Delvaux, catalog raisonné of the painted work-Michel Butor, Jean Clair, Suzanne Houbart-Wilkin. Figure 25, page 153. Publication in the daily La Nacion Buenos Aires from 1925. Madame Brasseur tells us: "At the start of the 1920s, Delvaux regularly visited Auderghem and particularly the Rouge Cloître where he went to paint from nature. Thanks to the enlightened knowledge of Louis Schreyers and the research of Christian Clauss, passionate authors of books devoted to Auderghem, the portion of the roadway represented was able to be determined. The house at number 111 has been demolished in the meantime ... but a confrontation with the photos from 2009 speak for themselves! " See the photographic montage transposing the painter's work in the current Chaussée de Tervuren d'Auderghem. Our feeling: This painting offers us a temporal journey through the lively roadway of a winter evening in 1924. This work from before its surrealist period, which began in 1934, is particularly rich in atmosphere and animation. A touch of surrealism appears gently with the lady in the foreground whose red hat covers 3/4 of her face. Finally, we would like to thank Madame Brasseur, director of the Delvaux foundation and all the speakers who highlighted this fascinating historical detail: the alderman of Auderghem culture, Sophie de Vos, Louis Schreyers, the Auderghem History Circle. Thanks also to VGC, Hertoginnedal library, Marijke Meel, Lieve Everaert and Christian Clauss And finally Sam Biesemans and Henri Ceuppens from HISCIWAB Dimensions: 100cm x 78cm. The 3% resale rights are applicable in addition to the hammer price. They are reduced to 1% above 200,000 euros.
