Nicolas ALLYE (XVII). - Lot 42
Nicolas ALLYE (XVII). Portrait of the illustrious Jesuit Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino (Frenchized as Robert Bellarmine), known in particular for his role within the commission of the Inquisition responsible for investigating the scientific discoveries of Galileo Galilei. He gave Galileo an official warning, forbidding him from publicly defending his views on heliocentrism. Born in Tuscany in 1542 and died in Rome in 1621, this portrait dates back to the twilight of his life, he is shown here busy writing in his study, the family coat of arms appearing at the bottom. He was ordained a cardinal priest in 1599 by Pope Clement VIII. Appointed archbishop of Capua and consecrated bishop in 1602, he was recalled to Rome in 1605 by Paul V. Member of the Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, he actively participated in the trial of Giordano Bruno, burned alive on February 17, 1600. He was beatified in 1923 and canonized in 1930. He is celebrated on September 17. Nicolas Allyé is a Lorraine painter from Pont à Mousson active in the 17th century and whose works are little known; they can be found in churches in eastern France, notably "The Wedding of Cana", a work classified as a historic monument and preserved at the Saint Vincent church in Neuves-Maisons, Meurthe et Moselle. The painter would have been cited in "the gazette des beaux arts of 1874". Dimensions: 180 x 135. Restorations, relining. Alteration and repainting to the right of the signature.
